Look into My Eyes

During a live hypnotism show, it may be possible to witness people doing the strangest things. Grown men crawling on the floor like babies, mature women barking wildly like dogs, and people having mad love affairs with pillows are just a few of the things one might see. Why do people act this way under hypnosis? The common belief is that they lose their free will and become slaves to the hypnotists every wish and command. In actuality, this is not the case.

While under a hypnotic trance, people become extremely relaxed. The conscious mind takes a backseat while the subconscious mind, which is the source of impulse and imagination, takes control over the bodys actions. In this relaxed state of mind, people become more suggestible and uninhibited, which explains the bizarre behavior of some subjects. However, the subconscious mind still has its sense of morality. In other words, individuals cannot be made to do anything against their will. Scientists compare a hypnotic trance to a wakeful dreamlike state. In this situation, people are fully engrossed in the scene being suggested to them, yet they are fully aware of everything that is happening around them.

So the next time you hear the words "Look into my eyes," dont panic. Remember that no one can make you do anything you dont want to do, unless they are the eyes of Brad Pitt or Nicole Kidman.

At first glance, Yoshitomo Naras cartoon creations may seem like any other strange character out of a comic book. Yet there is something peering out at us from these little beings that holds our eyes and makes us search for some deeper meaning.

Naras artwork brings us into the imaginative world of a child. Although these large-headed creations are childlike and cute, they are, at the same time, a bit creepy. The expressions that are seen in the wide eyes and sneaky smiles of these children are sometimes afraid, sometimes mischievous, and sometimes violently angry. Occasionally, the children are even holding knives as if they were threatening their viewer. However, as Nara explains, these weapons are not meant to be aggressive. On the contrary, they symbolize a childs defense in a world with "bigger, bad people all around them, who are holding bigger knives."

Yoshitomos ascent to the top of the pop art world wasnt overnight. A major turning point in Yoshitomos life came after his first year in college. Tired of this dull life, he took a year off and went searching for something different. With the money intended for the continuation of his studies, Nara traveled to Europe, where he found the inspiration to be himself. Returning to Japan, he finished up his studies and came out with his own sense of style that lives and breathes in the characters he creates.

Shaped by the mood and atmosphere of our modern lives, Naras creations are disturbing, odd, and undeniably cute. When people view his work, they have a chance to walk down the pathway back into the wild imagination of childhood.
