The Benefits of Drinking Green Tea

As I sit at my friends traditional-style Japanese dinner table, sipping a cup of green tea, he tells me the teas origins in Japan. "The custom of drinking green tea came from China about 1,200 years ago. Buddhist monks brought tea with them as a medicinal beverage. I can tell you that this is true in more ways than one."

I have to agree with my friend. Ive read countless articles in medical journals describing all the wonderful possibilities for prolonging and maintaining life that green tea has to offer. For these reasons, green tea is called a functional food. Green tea greatly reduces the incidence of cancer by strengthening the immune system. It suppresses aging by providing the body with antioxidants. It lowers blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol levels, stops common viruses such as the flu, deters food poisoning by killing harmful bacteria, and fights cavities. In short, it is the modern miracle drug that has been sitting just under our noses for hundreds of years. As one monk wrote in 1211, green tea is a "miraculous medicine with an extraordinary power to prolong life."

The Blushing Sea

Throughout time, sailors have witnessed foaming red water near shores. Some have run away from it, calling it evil, while others have run towards it, calling it holy. Lovers have been seen strolling along the beach hand in hand, thinking the red water symbolized love. Hearing the strong waves crashing towards the shore would bring any young man to his knees, declaring his love.

However, what would happen in reality is something else entirely. Upon dropping to his knees, the romantic young man would most likely experience a burning sensation in his eyes and nose. At the same time, his girlfriend would suddenly develop a dry choking cough. Those who run into the fiery red sea would _ fall ill in a few weeks, realizing the ones who had run away were the truly blessed.

Called "red tide," this phenomenon is made of the tiny algae Karenia brevis. When they multiply in great numbers, they create a red surface on the water. The algae absorb much of the oxygen from the sea, and release chemical toxins in the process. This, in turn, suffocates or poisons marine life. Red tides have also been responsible for human deaths through consumption of toxic fish.

Be suspicious of anyone inviting you for a romantic stroll by a red sea. Romance, even by the sea, can be a risky affair.
